Education Workshop

Recognising Education as a strongly felt need among the people affected by leprosy, SILF is now preparing to launch its higher education and vocational training program. As a first step towards giving the program a final shape, SILF is conducting a series of 4 workshops with school children and the parents with the objective of getting a better understanding of their needs and aspirations. This will provide an opportunity to raise awareness amongst the parents as well as the children of current market opportunities and the variety of options in vocational training and higher education that could be open to the children. In the course of the workshops, which are conducted by professional counsellor, children will be apprised of the requirements – academic, attitudinal, skill based and financial - and the different options. The facilitators will also conduct aptitude tests and one to one sessions with parents and children together, to help them match their skills and aptitudes to the vocational options of their interest/choice.

The first of these workshops was conducted in Delhi from 23rd-25th June 2009, where both children and parents participated. From the first responses the workshop was a great success with both children and adults saying that they felt more confident and hopeful for the future. A detail report will be posted on the website soon after the completion of the workshops along with details of the education program.
