SILF at Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week (Autumn Winter’09)
18th-22nd Mar’09
Hotel Intercontinental Eros, Nehru Place

SILF showcased an exquisite collection of garments made by renowned fashion designers at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (Autumn Winter’09). The garments, designed and conceptualised by the well known fashion designers have been made with textiles woven by weavers, once affected by leprosy and their families.

The designers who devoted their time and effort for this intiative were David Abraham, Anjana Bhargava, Ashima – Leena, Ritu Kumar, Varun Bahl, Anju Modi, Payal Jain, and Ria Ali. Focussing on the need to empower people affected by leprosy, Anju Modi said that “people affected by leprosy have the skills and the designers are appreciative of their talent. We are working to provide design inputs to make their products marketable and have visited their colony in Faridabad to explore the opportunity of coming out with a line for cottons.”

Ayesha Mohan (of Gulaal fame) also supported SILF’s fight against stigma associated with leprosy. Walking the ramp for Anjana Bhargava and wearing the jacket designed by her, made of the fabric woven by people affected by leprosy, Ayesha Mohan sent a strong message that leprosy does not spread by touching or wearing products made by people affected by leprosy. She was also appreciative of the quality, the softness and the warmth of the fabric.

For Anjana Bhargava, this is just a beginning. She is committed to working with the leprosy affected and invited everyone associated with the Fashion Industry to join this movement.
WIFW provided a great opportunity to not only create awareness about leprosy, but to also bring greater visibility to the skills and abilities of those affected by leprosy.
