Training for Socio Economic Change (TSEC)
SILF believes in a participatory approach in Socio-economic Change & mainstreaming of the affected population. For this process of social change to start from within a community that is highly marginalized it is essential to start with capacity building. SILF understands that with little previous experience of starting livelihood activities and projects on their won, members of the affected community have little understanding of documentation & procedures for grant applications etc. or the need for detailed financial planning to ensure sustainable economic activities.
With this in mind, SILF initiated Training for Socio-economic Change (TSEC), which empowers members of leprosy colonies, that is the potential beneficiaries & primary stakeholders of funds given by SILF, to identify feasible economic activities and to write project proposals seeking funding for the same.
SILF has uptil now conducted 4 such TSECs, one each in Pune (Maharashtra), Bhubaneswar (Orissa), Delhi (Delhi NCR) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
Objectives of the TSEC: TSECs are aimed at developing skills for identifying and developing feasible livelihood project proposals to achieve dignified income. They also expose participants to methods of effective implementation of the livelihood activities with a view to making them commercially viable. The trainings also help participants to learn how to establish links with govt/ non-govt. agencies and utilizing existing schemes.
Outcomes from TSECs: Till date TSECs have proved very useful for developing feasible project proposals by the beneficiaries, their better understanding on business avenues & appropriate marketing skills. Beneficiaries seem confident after understanding the financial support structure of SILF.

SOW- Stakeholders Orientation Workshop:
The execution of the projects once approved posed several challenges which could not be addressed in the TSECs. In view of the enormous challenges faced by the community in implementing the approved projects, SILF initiated Orientation Workshops for the approved beneficiaries and their leaders after each Project Selection Committee Meeting.
SILF conducted the1st Stakeholders Orientation Workshop (SOW) with an objective to explain in detail the procedures of financial support, the responsibilities to be undertaken and the contributions to be made by the beneficiaries & primary stakeholders including colony leaders, state leaders & the mentors. These workshops also provided an opportunity for beneficiaries to clarify their doubts and queries on SILF’s implementation process and to meet their Mentors (NGOs & consultants) with the help of whom the approved projects are executed.
Till date, SILF has had one SOW in Delhi for 24 beneficiaries from 16 colonies in 6 states in November, 2009. The 2nd SOW is being planned in April 2010.
